Galleries of Photos from Ireland

I am working on a series of galleries drawing together collections of scenic photographs taken in Ireland over the years. In fact it is a combination of reviewing and collecting old work (much of it film based) and continuing to develop scenic work that captures certain aspects of Ireland.

Although this has taken a bit of a back seat as the business continues to grow, new galleries will appear as this work continues, so come back soon or check my blog for announcements of new galleries.

Barley Cove, West Cork, February 2012. Wandering the beach with my compact digital camera, I came up with this idea for a sequence of images based on the numbering of the life bouys.
Another diverse range of images that have appeared on my Blog during 2010

10th January 2010 - 10/1/10 - a day of ones and the one day we had snow in Cork this winter. But probably the best snow I have experienced in Cork: it snowed during the day; it settled; it kept snowing; it stayed overnight; it didn't stay long enough to become a nuisance.

We all had a lot of fun that day. I probably should have been out shooting landscapes or cityscapes but I decided to play with my kids instead.

Since the snowball rolling was so good, after we'd made our 5 foot' snowman, I attempted some 'Snowball-Grass-Trail-Things' in the gardens and the pitches out the back. They're not exactly Andy Goldsworthy but its not something you get a lot of time to practice in Ireland.

Beaches offer many of the key elements for great IR Photography. In particular those wilder beaches where nature has never really released its firm hold and the completing elements of vegetation and salt water are still side by side.

This is the first gallery of digital infrared images. They have a different feel to the IR Film and open up the possibility of colour infrared as well as black and white within the same scene.

Looking back, I post a lot of weird stuff to my blog over the course of a year. It is an eclectic mix of news, stuff I see as I wander around Cork, things that interest me at a particular moment and photographs of any old bit of rubbish I come across.

So here's my pick of the images that I posted to the blog during 2009

My first gallery of Infrared work was taken in 2006 and 2007 using Infrared sensitive film (Kodak HIE). With correct filtration they render beautifully spooky images with dark skies, light foliage and a distinctive grain.

I think there is something about Infrared (IR) Photography that particularly suits the Irish landscape. Maybe it is the abundance of grand (often ruined) stone buildings which hint at a Celtic Golden Age. They seem to capture the 'feel' of the landscape more adequately than normal colour photographs.

I still have four rolls of HIE in the freezer and do hope to use them at some stage. Meanwhile now I also have a digital camera which has been converted for Infrared and is way more convienient (although it has a distinctively different feel to it). More of that to come...
